In 1943 Abraham Maslow wrote a paper “A Theory of Human Motivation” where he described his thoughts on the five levels of human need. Management training people and motivational speakers often refer to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

Those needs, often appearing in a pyramid pictogram, from the bottom up are physiological (food, water, shelter), safety (physical, emotional, financial), love and belonging (friendship and family), esteem (acceptance and value by others) and finally Self Actualization.

According to Maslow in order to be able to work on the Self Actualization; the final or top need, all other needs must be met.

Here in the oil patch we too know about Hierarchy. The Hierarchy we look at is “The Hierarchy of Controls”, a safety related hierarchy that can also appears as a pyramid.

The controls in order of most effective from least effective are: Elimination (physically remove the hazard), Substitution (replace the hazard with something less hazardous), Engineering Controls (isolate the people from the hazard), Administrative Controls (change the way people work), and finally PPE (personal protective equipment).
