We have known Katie Ohe for many years, and we are so pleased to hear that five or her early works have just become available. Katie found these works, dating from 1958 to 1963, in her studio after another work from 1958 sold at a recent auction. Two drawings were in fact just returned to her by Brett “the Hitman” Hart, drawings he found decades after Katie had moved her studio from the Hart Carriage House to her studio in Springbank. The works are now available for viewing at the gallery. Known primarily for her large scale, kinetic sculptures, these early works illustrate Katie’s great facility as a painter and drawer as well as her early influences.

Herringer Kiss Gallery are having a show of her sculpture this fall as well. This will be an exhibition and will include her Prayer Sculptures as well as new work called the Chuckles. Katie’s sculptures have never been available for sale to the general public before so there is much excitement around this exhibition.

Katie Ohe was born in 1937 near Peers, Alberta. She has studied art in Calgary, Montreal, New York City, and Verona, Italy, and has taught art at the Calgary Allied Arts Centre, the University of Calgary, Mount Royal College, and at the Alberta College of Art & Design. Her sculpture is inspired by the thoughts and emotions raised by everyday experiences, and the aesthetic experience of the pieces is one of communication, of sharing. Ohe has exhibited solo at the Glenbow Museum, ACAD, and the Nickle Museum, and has contributed to countless group exhibitions locally, nationally, and internationally. Her art is displayed in numerous public spaces throughout Calgary, and is held in many important corporate, private, and institutional collections. She has been awarded by the Y.W.C.A. of Calgary, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and the Alberta College of Art and Design.
