I love creating systems.

Ive spent a lifetime setting rules for myself that I sometimes follow, and long term strategies for success that I sometimes remember a small detail of. The creation of a system is a thoughtful but overvalued exploit. That system is a merely a seed that, if planted, can bring the change you intend. Without the action, it’s simply an empty structure, waiting to influence the world in—hopefully—a positive way.

Our lives are governed to the minute by systems others have put in place for us, and yet we still may find time to ourselves to build our own systems. A beer after work or the first pant-leg you occupy, it’s all down to a set of personal regulations we implement and abide by constantly. Yet, its the process of doing that that erodes our humanity—putting us a step closer to a mound of ants, each with a simple basic instinct and a role to fulfill.

Despite all that, we are the creators. Our systems are ours to form and with nothing more than a flicker of awareness, we are able to shape our systems into something that barely even resembles one. With this awareness, a nod to an anonymous passerby in the street can become a 15 minute naked interpretive dance instead.

When we create systems we should not be creating them for the sake of mindlessness or routine, but to show alternatives to a general way of thinking. Our systems should be individual to us and our way of thinking so that unleashed into the consciousness, it adds to—or, better yet, multiplies—the individuality currently there, and becomes one more piece in the ever solving puzzle of our human potential.

We all create systems. It is vital to remember that whatever system we create, it can always benefit from tweaks to improve the life of or bring a smile to the face of someone other than ourselves. Whether it be what happens when we push the jump button to how we say hello to the ones we love, we can always build with more awareness.

So let’s create a system. Can I borrow your haggis for a second?
