The alarm goes off at 04:45, our bags are packed, we’re ready to go. A short boat ride back to the mainland then to the Udaipur airport to catch our flight to Delhi where we don’t buy enough wine then we catch a flight to Bagdogra.

We get out of the airport, climb in to our van with our guide and then … a traffic jam.

Five hours later we are in Gangtok after getting visas to get into Sikkim, a special zone in India. Imagine driving on the Norquay road for a lifetime then arriving in a city where you can walk faster than cars move. The guide waved his hand in some direction and said the third highest mountain in the world Kangchenjunga is over there, too bad you are here at the wrong time of year to see it.

We are staying at the Nor Khill hotel just above the soccer stadium. I can’t imagine how many man hours it took to dig out and level for the pitch. The city is built on a double black diamond.By Kailas98 (Own work) [GFDL (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html) or CC BY-SA 3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)], via Wikimedia Commons
