“A people elated by pride, or soured by discontent, are seldom qualified to form a just estimate of their actual situation. The subjects of Constantine were incapable of discerning the decline of genius and manly virtue, which so far degraded them below the dignity of their ancestors; but they could feel and lament the rage of tyranny, the relaxation of discipline, and the increase of taxes.”

The Targa Florio – One of the great road races.
The Targa Florio was an endurance road race that took place in the mountains of Sicily, Italy from 1906 to 1977. It was the oldest sports car racing event and part of the World Sportscar Championship between 1955 and 1973². The race was known for its challenging course, which included winding roads through mountains and villages. The racing event ran for 71 years and 61 races before stopping in 1977, Since 1978 it has been staged as a rally.

Reyner Banham – ‘A Concrete Atlantis’
U.S. Industrial Building and European Modern Architecture.
One of the strengths of the book is Banham’s ability to connect the use of concrete to the unique environmental, cultural, and technological factors that shaped America during the mid-20th century. He demonstrates how concrete was not only a practical building material, but also a symbol of modernity and progress, and a reflection of aspirations for the future.
